Check out their portfolio

First, make sure your high quality maternity photographer has a portfolio where you can check out their work. Usually this is on their Instagram, Facebook, or most commonly, on their website! Take a good, hard look at their photos and make sure you’re absolutely in love with them. Remember, these are the photos you’re going to show your friends, family, and print out to display in your home for years to come!

Read their reviews

Any high quality maternity photographer shouldn’t have any problem with providing reviews from their past clients. You can also visit their Google business page and their Facebook to read about past client experiences! Their reviews should be consistently 4-5 stars, but keep in mind that one or two bad reviews shouldn’t impact your opinion too much. And if you have any specific questions about a review that someone left, don’t be afraid to reach out to the photographer to get background information.

Are they legally covered?

If the maternity photographer you’re inquiring with doesn’t have a contract for their business, that’s a major red flag! You should make sure that you’re covered and they’re covered for any and all situations. Make sure that once you sign the contract and pay any deposits or retainers, your date is secured. Asking about what their COVID clauses and policies are is also a great idea!

They should be able to guide you

With all of my clients, my goal is to make the process as simple as possible. From start to finish, I’m there to help you with everything you need! I have tons of blogs on my website that can help you prepare for your session, and when you book with me, I’m always just an email, phone call or text message away. Your photographer should be able to share their expertise with you whenever you need it!

Their work should be consistent

If you see in their portfolio that one photo looks drastically different from the next, that may be an indicator that maybe they’re not experienced in different light and/or weather conditions. Although we always hope to get those warm golden hour photos, you never know what mother nature is going to throw at you. That’s why you want to book a photographer that can be prepared for anything.

Pay attention to their personality

Of course you want high quality photos, but you also want to have fun and be comfortable during your session. If after the first few interactions with a potential photographer, you don’t seem to be connecting, it might be a good idea to move on. You want to feel welcomed immediately after chatting or inquiring with a potential photographer, so if you don’t feel that, it’s not a good sign!
